More and more solar power from your roof is ending up in battery storage systems in German basements – to be used at different times. Consumer advocates welcome this. “The biggest advantage of a storage system is that you can increase your self-consumption and degree of self-sufficiency,” says the consumer advice center.
Every Second Private Solar System With Storage
Hundreds of thousands of households found this again last year. After around 594,000 new home storage systems were installed in 2023, around 580,000 more were added in 2024.
According to the association, around 1.8 million home storage systems were already operating at the end of 2024. This means battery storage is installed in almost half of all 3.8 million photovoltaic systems in the home segment.
Storage Systems Help To Charge Electric Cars Cheaply.
The German Energy Storage Systems Association (BVES), representing storage manufacturers among others, sees several reasons for the strong demand. In addition to using cheaply generated energy and optimizing one’s energy supply, e-mobility is a particular driver.
“There is no cheaper way to charge an electric car than with solar power from your roof,” says Beatrice Schulz, BVES Head of Markets and Technologies. In combination with a storage unit, charging is even possible at night.
Electricity Storage: Make Sure You Purchase The Right Size
When making a purchase decision, consumers should make sure that the domestic storage system is not too large. Otherwise, the photovoltaic system may be unable to fill the storage system over long distances. “That means I have capacity in the cellar that I can’t use.”
However, it is possible to connect the storage system in such a way that it can also draw electricity from the grid. If you use dynamic electricity tariffs, you can buy and store electricity cheaply. “And then use it when electricity prices are high,” says the energy expert.
According to BVES, most appliances store between 5 and 15 kilowatt hours. Falling prices and other business models for household storage and the integration of additional applications mean we can expect further growth in the average storage size.
Prices Have Fallen By 75 Percent
The German Solar Industry Association (BSW) also believes that the main reason for the high demand for storage is the fall in costs.
“In the last ten years, prices for turnkey solar power storage systems have fallen by 75 percent,”
says Managing Director Carsten Körnig. 80 to 90 percent of all new solar power systems have a battery storage system. “Hardly any solar systems are installed without storage.”
The association emphasizes the advantages of battery storage systems. While only around 20 percent of the solar power generated can be used directly without storage, with storage, it could be up to 80 percent.
